Changing of the meaning of Pali and Sanskrit words in Thai language

Abstract


This study aims at comparing of the meaning of Pali and Sanskrit words in the lexicon of Pali, Thai, English and Sanskrit of His Royal Highness Krommaphra Chandaburinarunath with the Royal Institute Dictionary, B.E. 2542 (1999). The information used for this research consists of the original of Pali and Sanskrit words that have same root but different definition in the mentioned two books using the standard of the changing of narrower meaning, broader meaning and shifted meaning of Phraya Anumanrajathon. It is found that the changing of the meaning of Pali and Sanskrit words in Thai language consists of the changing of narrower meaning, broader meaning and shifted meaning, including the meaning that has been changed from concrete object to abstraction and vice versa.
